YANGON: Residents of some townships in Yangon Region reported that heavy rains have caused flooding in some areas of Yangon.
Heavy rain began on Tuesday (July 28) night and continued until the morning of the full moon day of Waso (July 29).
"We've been searching since night. The water is slowly rising. By 2am, the beds were submerged. By this afternoon, the water had receded a little. The rain had stopped. Some people were distributing rice packets," said a resident of Insein Township.
Heavy rains have caused flooding in areas such as Insein, Shwe Pyi Thar, North Dagon, East Dagon, Mayangone, South Okkalapa, and the intersection of historical roads in Yangon Region.
"As flooding is occurring in Inn Pauk Su Village, Ward 24, Shwe Pyi Thar, charitable organizations in Shwe Pyi Thar are working together to provide relief," an official from a local charitable organization said on social media.
As the rain stopped in the evening, the water levels in some areas where flooding had occurred have reportedly receded.
According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, there is a 100% chance of heavy rain in Yangon Region, Bago Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kayin State, Chin State, Mon State, Rakhine State, and Shan State (Eastern) until the evening of July 29.
In addition, the Meteorological Department predicts that scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible in Sagaing Region, Mandalay Region, Magway Region, and Kayah State.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has warned the public to be vigilant as severe weather conditions such as strong winds, thunder, lightning, and hail may occur in areas where clouds are forming. - Eleven Media/ANN
