TEHRAN (dpa): US airstrikes have caused extensive damage to water infrastructure in southern Iran, authorities said, with 18 facilities, including seawater desalination plants, reported damaged, according to the Iranian news agency Fars.
Fars reported on Monday that 10 of the plants had been completely destroyed in the airstrikes, citing an official from Hormozgan province.
According to the report, a seawater desalination plant on the island of Qeshm was put out of action at the start of the latest escalation in early July, disrupting the water supply for around 120,000 people.
Damage to water infrastructure is hitting the civilian population in southern Iran particularly hard.
The region has experienced extreme drought during the height of summer for years, with daytime temperatures regularly exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. - dpa
