MANILA: Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3 was raised over the western portion of the Babuyan Islands on Friday evening after Tropical Storm Kiyapo intensified into a severe tropical storm, the state weather bureau said.
In its 8pm weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Kiyapo was located over the coastal waters of Calayan Island in Calayan, Cagayan, as of 7pm.
The storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometres per hour (kph) near the centre, with gusts of up to 130kph, as it moved west-northwest at 25kph.
Signal No. 3 was raised over the western portion of the Babuyan Islands, including Calayan, Dalupiri and Fuga islands. The areas could experience winds of 89 to 117kph, posing a moderate to significant threat to life and property.
Signal No. 2 was raised over Batanes, the rest of the Babuyan Islands, northern parts of mainland Cagayan, northern parts of Apayao and parts of northern Ilocos Norte.
These areas could experience winds of 62 to 88kph, posing a minor to moderate threat to life and property, PAGASA said. - Inqurier/ANN
