PHNOM PENH: Approximately 88 per cent of Cambodia's workforce remains engaged in the informal economy, leaving millions of workers with limited or no access to legal labour standards and social safety nets.
The data was highlighted on Wednesday (July 22) during a national workshop on advancing social protection, which drew around 250 participants to the capital.
"Accelerating the transition of vulnerable workers into legally recognised and socially protected employment remains a key national priority," the press release said.
Cambodian Minister of Labour and Vocational Training Heng Sour emphasised the government's dual focus on expanding social safeguards and boosting employment quality.
Around seven million people, equivalent to roughly 41 per cent of the population, now benefit from social health protection schemes, according to a joint press release issued after the workshop. - Xinhua
