DHAKA: The mother of 17-year-old Arfan Hossain Nirjana, a class 10 student of Government Iqbal Nagar Secondary School in Khulna, has confessed to killing her daughter before a magistrate.
Khulna Metropolitan Magistrate Ibrahim Khalil Muhim recorded the confessional statement of Seema Akter under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on Friday (July 10) evening.
“During the statement, Seema admitted to her involvement in the killing of her daughter. The court later sent her to jail,” said Khulna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shofiqul Islam.
Meanwhile, the victim's father, Md Alim Hossain, has been taken into police custody for questioning in connection with the murder, said the OC.
Police recovered Nirjana's body, stuffed inside a plastic sack, in front of a seven-storey building in the Prantika Residential Area under Nirala in Khulna Sadar around 10:00pm on Wednesday. The body was later sent to the morgue of Khulna Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
The following day, after seeing photographs of the body circulating on social media, the victim's mother went to the hospital and identified it as that of her daughter.
Nirjana was a resident of Bashupara Banshtala area under Sonadanga Model Police Station in the city.
Following the incident, the family initially claimed that Nirjana, who had gotten married on April 21 this year, might have been killed by her husband.
However, as the investigation progressed, other family members also came under police scrutiny.
Sources involved in the investigation said new information emerged after analysing CCTV footage collected from the area, forensic evidence, the post-mortem report, and other relevant materials. As part of the investigation, both parents were questioned.
Earlier, OC Shofiqul Islam said investigators initially believed that Nirjana had been killed elsewhere before her body was packed into a plastic sack and dumped.
Police said the investigation is continuing, with all possible aspects of the case being examined to uncover the full circumstances behind the murder. - The Daily Star/ANN
