SINGAPORE: The historical romance drama “Key to the Phoenix Heart” is set to premiere on iQIYI International on July 11.
Starring Ai Mi and Hou Minghao, the series follows Xie Jiayu, the only daughter of the Grand Tutor, and Xiao Wuyi, Commander of Beifu, whose fates become intertwined through a marriage arrangement as they are drawn into the investigation of an old case and a shifting court power struggle.
Within a historical romance framework, the drama blends Mohist mechanical arts, political intrigue, mystery, and questions of identity and personal choice.
Ai Mi plays Xie Jiayu, the intelligent and spirited daughter of the Grand Tutor. Skilled in Mohist mechanical arts, she constantly seeks agency amid the pressures of marriage, family circumstances, and her own life choices.
Hou Minghao plays Xiao Wuyi, Commander of Beifu. Believed by the outside world to have died on the battlefield, he returns to the capital carrying the burden of an unresolved case and the pressure of his identity. Outwardly bold and unpredictable, he is driven by a deep pursuit of truth and responsibility. One refuses to be bound by marriage, while the other approaches with hidden intentions. From an unwilling bond to standing side by side against crisis, their relationship forms the emotional core of the series.

Xie Jiayu, who has her own emotional attachments and life plans, repeatedly tries to escape the marriage arrangement. Yet through her exchanges and clashes with Xiao Wuyi, she gradually becomes entangled in a far more complicated situation.
The main appeal of “Key to the Phoenix Heart” lies in its dual narrative of contract marriage romance and mechanism-driven mystery. Xie Jiayu is adept at finding a way out through both mechanical designs and complex dilemmas, while Xiao Wuyi must confront public misunderstanding and his own inner choices as he investigates the old case.
As the two move from testing each other and holding back, to building trust in moments of danger, their evolving relationship drives the romance forward and also affects the truth behind the old case and the broader court power structure.
As palace upheaval intensifies, Li Mao, a member of the imperial family, is pushed toward the center of power, and the fates of Xie Jiayu, Xiao Wuyi, and Li Mao are rewritten. The series connects marriage, old grievances, mechanical arts, and political transition, placing the characters’ emotions under repeated pressure as the external situation escalates. This gives the story stronger suspense and a more compelling viewing rhythm.
As a historical romance, “Key to the Phoenix Heart” combines relationship reversals with genre storytelling. It offers the emotional progression of a contract marriage romance, while also advancing the suspense surrounding the military armaments case. Through choices, trust, and twists of fate, the series offers international audiences a viewing experience rich in emotional engagement and genre appeal.
Starting July 11, open iQIYI International and step into “Key to the Phoenix Heart,” where bittersweet romance, mechanism mysteries, and palace intrigue come together. Join the game, follow the clues, and chase the love.
