BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Brunei is expected to experience active weather conditions from Wednesday (July 8) to Friday due to the indirect influence of Typhoon Bavi, the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) said on Tuesday. (Active weather is unsettled, dynamic atmospheric conditions typically caused by low-pressure systems.)
In a weather update, the department said the country, which is currently in the South-west Monsoon season, is forecast to experience occasional thundershowers accompanied by strong winds beginning July 8 through July 10.
Wind speeds may reach up to 55 kilometres per hour during heavy thundershowers.
As of 11.45am Tuesday, Typhoon Bavi was located over the Pacific Ocean, about 3,000 kilometres from Brunei, and is forecast to move northwestwards.
Sea conditions over Brunei waters are generally expected to remain slight to moderate, with wave heights of between 0.5 and 1.5 metres. However, conditions are forecast to deteriorate from Thursday to Saturday, with waves reaching up to 2.5 metres, resulting in rough seas.
The Meteorological Department advised the public, road users and mariners to take precautionary measures as strong winds could damage unstable structures, uproot trees and blow off roofs.
The department also warned of the risk of flash floods, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas as well as along riverbanks during prolonged heavy rain and high tide.
Small boats and recreational or marine sports activities are strongly discouraged during periods of moderate to rough sea conditions.
The department said it will continue to monitor the situation and issue further weather advisories or warnings if necessary. It also urged the public to verify weather information through official channels and not rely on unverified information circulating on social media. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
