Vietnam's Con Dao named world's top hidden island destination

HANOI: Vietnam’s Con Dao has topped a list of the world’s 30 hidden islands for off-the-grid adventure and seclusion compiled by travel magazine Travel + Leisure, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

The ranking has earned Con Dao recognition as a destination that remains largely untouched by mass tourism.

According to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, Con Son, the largest island in the Con Dao archipelago, is renowned for its dramatic granite cliffs, pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters off Vietnam’s south-eastern coast.

Limited tourism development has helped preserve the island’s natural ecosystems and tranquil atmosphere, offering visitors an authentic escape and a range of outdoor adventures. It has become a favourite destination for travellers seeking unspoilt landscapes and unique experiences.

Visitors can explore the island by motorbike, travelling along scenic coastal roads to remote attractions, including 19th-century lighthouses and the unspoilt natural area of Dam Tre.

Con Dao is also known for its fresh seafood, with local dishes prepared in a simple style that highlights natural flavours. Restaurants and eateries maintain a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, while local residents are widely praised for their hospitality.

The Tourism Information Centre under the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism said Con Dao’s appeal lies in its blend of turquoise seas, rugged mountains, peaceful surroundings and rich natural heritage. These qualities have helped strengthen its reputation as one of the world’s most distinctive travel destinations.

Other islands featured on Travel + Leisure’s list include Gili Trawangan (Indonesia), Pico Island (Portugal), Scrub Island (British Virgin Islands), Skopelos (Greece), Flatey (Iceland), Great Barrier Island (New Zealand), Robinson Crusoe Island (Chile) and Colonsay (Scotland). - Bernama-VNA
