Two killed in railway tunnel construction accident in northern Thailand

BANGKOK (Xinhua): Two people were killed and at least two others seriously injured when a heavy installation component fell onto them inside a railway tunnel under construction in northern Thailand on Saturday, local media reported on Sunday.

The accident occurred inside the 3.4-kilometer Doi Luang tunnel in Chiang Rai Province, part of the Den Chai-Chiang Rai-Chiang Khong railway line, when falling equipment resulted in the deaths of two workers and severe injuries to other workers, who were immediately transferred to the local hospital.

The initial report indicated that the workers were installing waterproofing inside the tunnel.

The State Railway of Thailand has ordered a two-day suspension of work at the site for experts and relevant agencies to thoroughly inspect the structural conditions and determine the cause of the accident. -- Xinhua
