VIENTIANE: Laos' Ministry of Health held a ceremony marking the 61st anniversary of Lao Medical Day, which falls on June 18, commemorating more than six decades of development in the country's health sector.
The ceremony was attended by Lao Minister of Health Baykham Khattiya, along with leaders, public health administrators, former senior leaders, as well as doctors, nurses, and health workers, according to a report released Thursday (June 18) by the Center of Information and Education for Health under the ministry.
Speaking at the meeting, Baykham expressed deep gratitude to doctors, nurses, and health workers for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting public health and saving lives across all ethnic groups.
She also paid tribute to the "white-shirt warriors" for their unwavering commitment in both wartime and peacetime.
She noted that the Lao Medical Day is a historically significant occasion for the Lao people, reflecting the growth and achievements of the health sector over 60 years.
As part of the celebration, participants discussed two key public health issues, including noncommunicable diseases and thalassemia, which have significant impacts on public health and the country's future human resources.
These conditions are also recognised as priority concerns by the World Health Organisation and other international partners.
The event also featured an exhibition showcasing achievements from both public and private sectors, highlighting progress and innovations in the health sector. - Xinhua
