Brunei police warn public about fake traffic fine SMS scam

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) has urged the public to remain vigilant against a fraudulent text message claiming to be from the police and demanding payment for alleged traffic offences.

In a statement issued Monday night (June 15), the RBPF denied sending the SMS, which has been circulating online, and stressed that the message was not issued by any department within the force.

Police said the message is a form of online scam designed to deceive members of the public into revealing personal information or making unauthorised payments.

The RBPF advised recipients not to click on any links contained in the message, warning that doing so could expose mobile devices and personal data to misuse by irresponsible parties.

Members of the public are also encouraged to exercise caution when receiving suspicious messages, refrain from sharing personal information and verify any questionable communication directly with the relevant authorities.

The police further advised anyone who has received the message and made a payment to immediately contact the emergency hotline 993.

Those with information related to the scam may also contact the Anti-Scam Helpline at 16993.

The RBPF reiterated the importance of public awareness and vigilance in combating online scams and protecting personal information from cybercriminals. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
