VIENTIANE: The governments of Laos and Vietnam have agreed to deepen cooperation in political affairs, security, education and strategic development projects, as the two neighbours seek to strengthen their longstanding special relationship amid regional and global challenges.

This commitment was reiterated on Tuesday (June 9), when Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone paid a courtesy call on the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Committee and the President of Vietnam, To Lam, as part of his official visit to Vietnam to participate in the 3rd Asean Future Forum held during June 7-9.

The two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation and expressed satisfaction at the steady progress in implementing agreements reached by the top leadership of both countries, including the outcomes of the 48th Meeting of the Laos-Vietnam Intergovernmental Cooperation Committee.

They noted that cooperation continues to expand across a wide range of sectors, supported by regular high-level exchanges and growing collaboration between ministries, provinces and local authorities.

Looking ahead, the two sides agreed to strengthen political ties and strategic trust, while enhancing defence and security cooperation to address emerging challenges and safeguard regional stability.

Human resource development featured prominently in the discussions. Laos and Vietnam agreed to expand educational cooperation and training opportunities to help develop a highly skilled workforce capable of supporting future economic and social development.

The leaders pledged closer coordination for preparations to mark the Laos-Vietnam Solidarity and Friendship Year in 2027, which will commemorate the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation between the two countries.

Both sides stressed the importance of raising public awareness, particularly among youngsters, about the historical significance of the Laos-Vietnam special relationship and the shared sacrifices that have shaped bilateral ties.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to maintain close consultations and mutual support in regional and international forums.

Prime Minister Sonexay conveyed greetings from Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith and expressed appreciation for Vietnam’s longstanding support for Laos’ national development.
