PHNOM PENH: Bavet town authorities, in cooperation with the Svay Rieng Provincial Royal Gendarmerie, conducted a raid on an unlikely online scam location — a vacation home in Thlok village, Chrak Mtes commune, Bavet. They discovered a sophisticated operation, with more than 100 phones seized per resident.

According to the Bavet town administration, 19 individuals were detained on the Wednesday (June 3) raid.

During the operation, however, authorities confiscated 2,100 company-owned mobile phones and 22 personal phones, along with other equipment used in the commission of the crimes.

The suspects and seized materials were transferred to the Svay Rieng Provincial Gendarmerie.

On the same day, authorities in Phnom Penh inspected eight locations in Sen Sok district’s Samrong Teav village. One case of technology-based fraud was uncovered, with three Chinese men detained.

In addition, fines were issued to the owners or managers of two apartments for hosting undocumented foreigners.

The fines totalled 36 million riel (approximately US$9,000) for the nine illegal migrants who were discovered. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
