YANGON: A total of 75 Myanmar nationals who had escaped from online scam compounds in Cambodia have been repatriated to Myanmar, according to official sources.

The Myanmar government stated that it continues to prioritise the welfare of its citizens abroad and works through Myanmar embassies and consulates to assist nationals facing difficulties overseas and facilitate their return home as quickly as possible.

As part of these efforts, the Myanmar Embassy in Phnom Penh coordinated the return of 75 Myanmar citizens — 45 men and 30 women — who had fled online scam operations located in Cambodia’s border regions.

The group was flown back to Myanmar aboard a military aircraft on the afternoon of May 27 and arrived at the Yangon Mingaladon Air Force Base shortly after 1pm., officials said.

Authorities noted that Myanmar embassies and consulates will continue to cooperate with relevant authorities to assist citizens encountering hardships while working abroad and arrange their safe return to Myanmar when necessary.

The repatriation is part of ongoing efforts to support Myanmar nationals affected by illegal online scam networks operating in parts of South-East Asia. - Eleven Media/ANN
