NEW DELHI: (Bernama-Xinhua) At least five workers of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were wounded in a crude bomb attack during the post-poll violence in India's eastern state of West Bengal, police said on Thursday (May 7), reported Xinhua.
The attack took place on Wednesday night in Panihati area of North 24 Parganas district, about 18 kilometres north of Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal.
"We are being told the BJP workers were interacting with residents of Panihati when a group of motorcycle-borne attackers targeted them with bombs," a police official said.
BJP swept the polls in its first-ever victory in West Bengal, defeating the Trinamool Congress party, which ruled the state since 2011.
Following the announcement of election results, clashes between rival party supporters erupted in the state. So far, five people have been killed. Reports said hundreds of people were arrested in connection with the violence. - Bernama-Xinhua
