Two foreigners jailed, caned for overstaying in Brunei

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Two foreign nationals have been sentenced to imprisonment and caning after pleading guilty to overstaying in Brunei Darussalam, the Immigration and National Registration Department (INRD) said.

Hengky Tjong, a 38-year-old Indonesian man, was sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane under Section 15(1) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 17, for remaining in the country after his immigration pass had expired. His sentence took effect on April 18, 2026.

The case was transferred to the INRD from the Royal Brunei Police Force’s Traffic Control and Investigation Department.

In a separate case, Rafiqul Islam, a 34-year-old Bangladeshi man, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane for a similar offence under the same provision. His sentence commenced on April 21, 2026.

The INRD reiterated that overstaying is a serious offence and reminded foreign nationals to comply with immigration regulations at all times. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
