BATANGAS, (Philippines): Former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited a storage unit of liquified natural gas in the province of Batangas in the Philippines on Friday (May 1) and inspected the decarbonization efforts at the plant. Kishida, a member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, is visiting the country as a special envoy of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

The Batangas LNG Terminal is jointly operated by Tokyo Gas Co. and a Philippine firm. “This project is a symbol of the cooperation between Japan and the Philippines,” Kishida said.

LNG emits a smaller amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases compared to traditional fossil fuels, and so has less of an environmental impact.

Wearing fireproof clothing, Kishida observed the terminal and was briefed on how the LNG will be supplied to the neighboring thermal power station following its regasification.

Following the inspection, he met with local business leaders in Manila and exchanged opinions on the energy crisis amid the Middle East conflict.

During his tenure as a prime minister, Kishida proposed the establishment of the Asia Zero Emission Community, a framework for decarbonization in Asia. He serves as its Supreme Advisor to the Parliamentary Association. Members of the Parliamentary Association accompanied Kishida during the visit. - The Yomiuri Shimbun
