TAMIL NADU, (India): Nine people were killed and several others sustained critical injuries after a tourist van veered off a hairpin bend and fell into a deep gorge in the Valparai hills of Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district on Saturday (April 18).

The accident took place on a steep mountain stretch known for its sharp turns, when the vehicle lost control at the 13th hairpin bend and plunged down to the 9th bend, police said, underlining the risks associated with the winding hill route frequently used by tourists.

How the accident unfolded

According to Valparai Police, the van was carrying 13 tourists from Perinthalmanna in Kerala and was on its way down the hills after a sightseeing trip. The vehicle, driven by Mohammed Fasith (21), reportedly lost control while negotiating the 13th hairpin bend.

In a press note, police said the van skidded off the road and fell down the slope, landing near the 9th hairpin bend below.

Rescue operation and medical response

Senior police officials, including the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Valparai Sub-Division and the local Inspector, reached the spot soon after the incident and supervised rescue efforts.

A large-scale operation was launched, with 16 ambulances rushed to the accident site. Of these, 13 ambulances transported the injured to the Pollachi Government Hospital.

All the injured passengers have been rescued and admitted for treatment. Authorities said an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
