Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is almost at a standstill amid the threat of US blockade, says data

A ship is seen off the coast of Ras al-Khaimah, the day after the failure of US-Iran peace talks on April 13, 2026. The failure of US-Iran peace talks has left the US president with several unpalatable options, as analysts say his order to blockade the strategic Strait of Hormuz could further complicate his next move on April 12, 2026. Any hopes that the US vice president would emerge from the marathon day of negotiations with top Iranian officials with a deal to end a war that has rippled across the Middle East were dashed when he left hosts Pakistan emptyhanded. -- Photo by AFP

WASHINGTON (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti): There is practically no movement through the Strait of Hormuz in the run-up to a possible naval blockade by the United States, RIA Novosti found out after reviewing data on the movement of ships in the area.

As of 11:57 GMT, there was one tanker under the flag of Comoros in the Strait, as well as grain vessels under the flags of Panama and the Marshall Islands, the data showed.

On April 12, United States President Donald Trump announced that the US would begin a blockade of all vessels attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz.

He also instructed the US Navy to track and intercept all vessels that paid Iran for passage through the strait.

On Saturday, Iran and the US began talks in Islamabad after Trump announced he had reached an agreement with Tehran on a two-week ceasefire.

On Sunday morning, the head of the US delegation, Vice President JD Vance, announced that Iran and the US had failed to reach an agreement during the negotiations and that the US delegation would return home without a deal.

On Feb 28, the US and Israel launched strikes on targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran responded by striking Israeli territory and US military facilities in West Asia.
