YAMAGATA: A “human shogi” event was held on Saturday in Tendo, Yamagata Prefecture, the nation’s top producer of shogi pieces. (Shogi pieaces chess pieces made from wood that have Kanji characters painted on them.)

Second dan-ranked female player Aya Uchiyama and second kyu-ranked female player Kanade Sunahara faced off in the game.

Forty high school students clad in armour acted as the shogi pieces. Following the instructions of the players, they moved around a huge board — about 17 metres long and 14 metres wide — on the summit of Mt. Maizuru.

Uchiyama ultimately won the game.

Approximately 46,000 people watched the game, which is a traditional spring event in the city. - The Japan News/ANN
