Death toll of Halisahar gas leak blast in Bangladesh rises to six


DHAKA: One more victim of the gas leak explosion in Chattogram’s Halisahar has died, raising the death toll to six.

Shipon Hossain, 30, died around 7:00pm Saturday (Feb 28) while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, said the institute’s surgeon Dr Shawon Bin Rahman.

Shipon had suffered 82 per cent burns, he added.

Earlier, the explosion claimed the lives of Shipon’s brother Sakhawat Hossain; Sakhawat’s wife, Nurjahan Akter Rani; their son, Shawon; their elder brother, Samir Ahmed Sumon; and Sumon’s wife, Ashura Akter Pakhi.

Dr Shawon said three other victims are currently undergoing treatment at the institute in critical condition.

The explosion occurred in the early hours of February 23 at their residence in Halisahar due to a gas leak. Family members rushed the injured to the burn institute later that evening. - The Daily Star/ANN
