BEIJING: An eight-year-old boy in central China who spent 55 days in a coma was brought back to consciousness by the heartfelt calls of his classmates in their videos.
Liu Chuxi, a pupil from Yueyang, Hunan province, fell into a coma after a car accident in November last year, according to a report by the mainland media outlet The Paper.
He suffered severe brain damage and lung injuries in the crash.
Doctors told his family that his chances of waking up were extremely slim.
But his mother refused to give up and took him to multiple hospitals in search of treatment.
A doctor said that familiar sounds or favourite music could stimulate specific areas of the brain and potentially wake him up.
His mother gathered the school’s wake-up music and morning exercise tunes, playing them for Liu every day.
Meanwhile, Liu’s teacher organised his classmates to record heartwarming videos for him.
One boy said in a video: “Chuxi, wake up soon, let’s go play football together.”
A girl said in another clip: “We all miss you, Chuxi. If you can hear us, please open your eyes. The exams are coming and we are waiting for you to come back and study with us.”
Another boy sang Liu’s favourite song while someone else shared funny stories from class.
Liu’s mother played the videos and maths lesson recordings from his teacher beside his bed every day.
After 45 days in a coma, Liu responded by moving his eyelids and a few days later, he smiled when he heard his teacher’s voice.
On day 55, he regained consciousness and was able to move his left hand.
His teacher and classmates then visited him in hospital, bringing toys and cards.
The teacher also jokingly told Liu he would be exempt from homework, prompting Liu to happily try to open his eyes and wave in response.
Liu’s mother told the media: “I finally saw the sun behind the clouds. A miracle really happened.”
She expressed her deep gratitude to the doctors, teachers and classmates, adding: “I hope my son’s case can offer hope to families facing a similar situation.”
Reports said that the boy’s health is steadily improving, though he still faces a long road to recovery.
Liu’s story has inspired many people on mainland social media, with related videos racking up more than 10 million views.
One online observer said: “Seeing the little boy smile brought tears to my eyes. I truly admire his mother’s determination and his incredible strength.”
While another wrote: “Some things cannot be explained by medicine. Let’s leave them to love and miracles. Chuxi will definitely return to school.” - South China Morning Post
