PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Cults and Religion united to boost tourism appeal through the Jan 27 signing of the “Cooperation on Promoting Religious Tourism” memorandum of understanding (MoU).

The tourism ministry described the joint promotion as a testament to the spirit of close cooperation and shared commitment to achieving collaboration in the development of religious tourism.

The MoU was signed by Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism, and Chay Borin, Minister of Cults and Religion.

According to the tourism ministry the agreement intends to increase visitor numbers by creating and diversifying religious tourism events in Cambodia.

Through this cooperation, training courses related to hospitality and guides for religious tourism will be organised, along with the improvement of key infrastructure to support the development of religious tourism products.

“Cambodia is a country with a strong foundation based on culture, history and religion. Religion is not only the foundation of belief and social morality, but also the core basis for maintaining peace and social harmony,” said Hak.

He added that the MoU confirms a shared vision of promoting religious and cultural tourism. He noted that tourism development must be based on principles of resilience, sustainability and inclusiveness, while preserving cultural identity and respecting the values of all religions.

He believed that through this cooperation, the cults and religions ministry can transform cultural and religious heritage assets into a driving force for economic and social development, for the supreme benefit of the nation and its people. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
