Politician shot dead in Bangladesh capital


DHAKA: A politician of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Azizur Rahman Musabbir (pic), was shot and killed in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday night (Jan 8), a senior police official said on Thursday, reported Xinhua.

Md Fazlul Karim, an additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Tejgaon Zone), told Xinhua, "Two people were shot. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, but one of them was already dead on arrival."

According to the official, the incident occurred around 8 pm local time in the Karwan Bazar commercial district in Dhaka.

He said the deceased had previously been a senior official of Dhaka Metropolitan North Swechchhasebak Dal, the volunteer wing of BNP.

Police said attackers on motorcycles fired at the victims before fleeing, and the motive of the shooting is still under investigation. - Bernama-Xinhua
