YANGON: The minimum wage for basic workers has been set at Ks 7,800 (US$3.71) after the government approved an additional allowance of Ks 1,000 on top of the existing Ks 2,000 allowance, according to the Myanmar Gazette.

The Ministry of Finance and Revenue announced that casual employees and daily wage workers in government departments and organizations are currently paid a basic daily wage of Ks 4,800 for an eight-hour workday. An additional allowance of Ks 1,000 was first granted in October 2023, followed by another Ks 1,000 allowance starting in August 2024, bringing the total allowance to Ks 2,000.

Under the new decision, a further Ks 1,000 allowance has been approved, raising the total additional allowance to Ks 3,000. As a result, the daily wage for casual workers has been officially increased to Ks 7,800.

The new wage rate was authorised under Notification No. 110/2025, issued by the Ministry of Finance and Revenue on Sept 30, 2025. The revised allowance will take effect from October 1, 2025, and will apply to working days as well as leave days and public holidays in accordance with the 1951 Leave and Holidays Act.

However, the new wage provision does not apply to small businesses employing fewer than 10 workers, family-owned enterprises, or similar small-scale operations. In addition, Notification No. 1/2024 issued by the National Committee on Minimum Wage on August 9, 2024, has been revoked and superseded by this latest notification, the Myanmar Gazette reported. - Eleven Media/ANN
