BANGKOK: Sihasak Phuangketkeow, the Foreign Minister of Thailand, during his visit to Japan from Dec 18-20, said he was open to discuss the ongoing Thailand-Cambodia border conflict.

On Thursday (Dec 18), he met with Japanese Foreign Minister and Defence Minister to strengthen bilateral ties and promote Japanese investment in Thailand, especially in high-tech industries.

In his visit, Sihasak also addressed the concerns raised by neighbouring countries and international parties about the situation at the Thailand-Cambodia border.

During the meeting, Sihasak clarified Thailand's position on the ongoing border conflict, emphasising that Thailand did not instigate the unrest.

He explained that while Cambodia has expressed interest in ceasefire talks, there is a need for Cambodia to show genuine intent by demonstrating its readiness for peace, including an actual ceasefire.

He further expressed that Thailand did not reject foreign countries offering mediation, but stressed that neutrality is crucial in any mediation efforts.

"Thailand would welcome efforts from other nations to help facilitate peace, but it is important that the mediation is unbiased and not tilted in favour of one side."

Sihasak also mentioned that the ultimate resolution to the conflict must come from direct negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, with Cambodia taking the first step towards dialogue.

In addition to the border situation, Sihasak highlighted that Thailand’s relationship with Japan remains strong, with both countries continuing to build economic and cultural ties.

The year 2026 marks the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Japan, and Sihasak discussed future initiatives to promote deeper cooperation in trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges.

Sihasak also expressed gratitude for the ongoing collaboration between both countries and reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to working with Japan to enhance regional stability and promote mutual prosperity.

As part of his visit, Sihasak met with Japanese lawmakers and business leaders to further strengthen economic cooperation and investment opportunities, particularly in sectors like digital technologies, clean energy, and biotechnology.

During the visit, he also had discussions with Japanese academics regarding political and security cooperation in the region, reinforcing Thailand's role as a key player in regional peace and stability.

In conclusion, Sihasak emphasised that Thailand is committed to peace and diplomacy, highlighting the importance of neutral mediation, and urged Cambodia to demonstrate its readiness for talks. - The Nation/ANN
