Air attack on teashop in north-western Myanmar kills at least 20

BERLIN (dpa): At least 20 people died and 30 others were injured in an airstrike on a teashop in Tabayin, north-western Myanmar, local authorities told dpa on Saturday.

They said the ruling military junta had carried out the Friday evening attack. A five-year-old child was the youngest fatality, and the oldest was 77, with the death toll expected to rise.

Dozens of patrons had gathered in the teashop to watch a repeat broadcast of a match of the national women's football team.

According to eyewitnesses, two bombs were dropped directly onto the establishment. The junta has not commented on the attack.

Myanmar has been mired in violence and chaos since a military coup in February 2021 that ousted the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize.

The junta regularly carries out airstrikes on rebel groups, often hitting civilians. - dpa
