Vietnamese capital to pilot low-emission zone starting July 2026

HANOI: Vietnam's capital Hanoi to pilot a low-emission zone in nine wards inside Ring Road 1 starting July 2026, as part of efforts to reduce air pollution, local media VnExpress reported on Monday (Nov 24).

From Jan. 1, 2028, the plan will expand to all areas inside Ring Road 1 and parts of Ring Road 2. By 2030, it will cover areas within Ring Road 3, including 36 wards and communes of Hanoi.

Under the proposal, gasoline-powered motorbikes will be restricted to specific hours or areas inside the low-emission zone to minimsze impacts on daily life.

The capital currently has more than eight million vehicles, including 6.9 million motorbikes, according to data from Hanoi's Department of Construction.- Xinhua
