Over 3,000 evacuated in Eastern Visayas as heavy rains, strong winds begin to affect Philippine region

TACLOBAN CITY: A total of 735 families, or 3,114 individuals, have been given shelter in various evacuation centres across Eastern Visayas as Typhoon “Uwan” (international name: Fung-wong) brings rains and strong winds to parts of the region.

According to an updated situation report from the Police Regional Office 8 (PRO-8), as of 5.30pm on Saturday (Nov 8), 10 evacuation centres — four in Biliran and six in Northern Samar — are currently occupied. The rest of the 2,367 evacuation centres across the region remain on standby if weather conditions worsen.

The Office of Civil Defense has earlier directed the local government units to conduct preemptive evacuations, especially those residing in flood- or landslide-prone areas.

To ensure public safety, 38 police personnel have been deployed in affected areas — 34 from the Biliran Provincial Police Office (BPPO) and four from the Northern Samar PPO (NSPPO). Of these, 22 officers are stationed in evacuation centres and seven are securing vital installations.

Meanwhile, PRO-8’s Regional Standby Support Force (RSSF), composed of 1,714 personnel, has been placed on alert for rapid deployment. The Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) has also assigned nine personnel in evacuation centres to assist vulnerable evacuees.

The report also noted that 572 passengers remain stranded in seaports across the region due to the suspension of sea travel. No stranded passengers were recorded in airports or bus terminals.

As of the latest update, there were no reported casualties, flooding, landslides, isolated barangays, or power interruptions in the region.

PRO-8 said it continues to closely track the movement of “Uwan” and coordinate with local government units and disaster response in the event evacuation or rescue operations will be needed. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
