Stampede at South India temple claims at least 10 lives

NEW DELHI (Bernama): At least 10 people were killed and many injured in a stampede at a Hindu temple in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday.

The incident occurred at the Kasibugga Venkateswara Swamy temple in Srikakulam district.

A huge number of devotees had gathered for rituals on the occasion of Ekadashi, an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar.

Authorities were unable to control the swelling crowds, according to local officials and media reports.

Deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan urged the state administration to regulate crowds of devotees at temples on spiritually significant days to prevent mishaps. - Bernama
