COLOMBO: Over 40,000 dengue cases have been reported in Sri Lanka from Jan. 1 to Monday (Oct 20), said the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) on Tuesday.

A total of 40,633 dengue cases have been reported, Community Medical Specialist Prashila Samaraweera said, adding that a majority of the cases have been reported from the Western Province, the most populous area of Sri Lanka.

She said 22 dengue-related deaths have been reported within that time period, and most mosquito breeding sites have been found within schools, government institutions, places of worship and abandoned lands and buildings.
