NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (Oct 11) met with Dario Amodei, CEO and Co-founder of Anthropic, an AI safety and research company. During the meeting, PM Modi and Amodei discussed India’s pivotal role in shaping the future of responsible artificial intelligence.

One of the key highlights of the meeting was Anthropic’s announcement of plans to open its first office in India, located in Bengaluru, by early 2026.

The company aims to tap into the city’s thriving tech ecosystem and leverage India’s vast pool of skilled professionals.

It also plans to promote responsible AI applications across critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and agriculture.

Anthropic has committed to hiring local talent and collaborating with Indian organisations to drive AI-led growth.

The company will also enhance Claude’s Indic language capabilities, expanding support for major Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, and Marathi.

The meeting underscores India’s growing prominence as a global hub for artificial intelligence development and innovation.

With its large base of technical talent and focus on ensuring the equitable benefits of AI, India is well-positioned to play a leading role in shaping the global AI landscape.

"Glad to meet you. India’s vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth are driving AI innovation that is human-centric and responsible.

"We welcome Anthropic’s expansion and look forward to working together to harness AI for growth across key sectors," PM Modi said.

Anthropic’s expansion plans in India include recruiting Indian professionals and partnering with businesses, nonprofits, and startups to apply AI in education, agriculture and healthcare; investing in Claude’s Indic language performance, beginning with enhanced support for Hindi and several other regional languages; and strengthening India’s rapidly growing AI ecosystem and meeting the rising global demand for Claude. - The Statesman/ANN
