6.9 earthquake in Cebu: Aftershocks explained

CEBU CITY, Philippines: A week after the powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake rocked northern Cebu, thousands of aftershocks continue to jolt affected communities, keeping many families too afraid to return home.

As of 8am on Wednesday (Oct 8), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded 9,188 aftershocks, ranging between magnitude 1 and 5.1 on the Richter scale, since the Sept 30 main shock.
