PHNOM PENH; The government has begun construction on a new floating tourist port in Kampong Cham town, as part of its efforts to promote tourism and develop the Kampong Cham urban centre.
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport is responsible for the construction, which began on Friday (Oct 3) morning, with the project expected to take 24 months to complete.
Ministry spokesperson Phorn Rim described the new project as an “extraordinary blessing” for Kampong Cham province. The floating metal port will be located at the old ferry terminal in Kampong Cham town, which previously handled scheduled international tourist boat arrivals from Vietnam.
“The operation of the new port will provide a remarkable opportunity to accelerate the development of Kampong Cham city. Furthermore, because it is located near the planned expansion of the waterway from Phnom Penh to Kampong Cham and the Funan Techo Canal, it will attract even more tourists in the future,” he said.
Once it is completed, the port will be handed over to the Kampong Cham provincial administration to manage and operate.
He noted that in accordance with the implementation plan, construction of phase one of the port will take 24 months. Construction of phase two, which will include an administrative building and a waiting area for tourists, will begin in 2026.
The Kampong Cham provincial administration added the project will transform the old ferry terminal into an attractive new facility.
It expected that the floating port will bring major benefits to Kampong Cham, as well as contribute to waterway connectivity with other provinces.
“The new port in Kampong Cham town will be an attractive development, enabling domestic and international tourist boats to dock in an orderly and proper manner. Comfortable waiting and seating areas for tourists will also be arranged,” it stated. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
