SINGAPORE - The Al-Istiqamah Mosque in Serangoon North was evacuated on Wednesday (Sept 24) after a suspicious parcel was found delivered to its premises.

The police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the incident at 2 Serangoon North Avenue 2 at about 5.20pm.

SCDF said that an unknown parcel was found on the premises upon its arrival.

The mosque was evacuated by police and SCDF as a precautionary measure, police said.

Police and SCDF officers are at the scene to assess and manage the situation, and the public is advised to avoid areas near the mosque, they added.

SCDF said that hazardous materials (hazmat) specialists are currently at the scene and are investigating.

The area has also been cordoned off.

In a Facebook post at about 9pm, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) said it is aware that the mosque received a suspicious parcel.

It added that it is working closely with the authorities on the matter.

The Al-Istiqamah Mosque is one of Singapore’s newest mosques under the Mosque Building Fund, according to the Muis website.
