YANGON: A man was arrested and questioned in Taunggyi under Section 23(a) of the Law on the Protection of Multi-Party Democratic Elections from Disruption and Sabotage.
The man, who lives in Aye Tharyar Ward (1) of Taunggyi Township, Shan State (South), had allegedly reshared a CCTV footage of a car robbery in Lashio City, posted by someone else on Facebook under the name Lashio Baegyi, and added election-related comments.
After some people wrote on social media demanding action against the account owner for the post by the account named Lashio Baegyi, the relevant authorities arrested and detained him for allegedly spreading the post on social media to undermine the multi-party democratic general election.
"The incident is true. They said it was from Aye Tharyar Ward (1). I heard they arrested him immediately. I think they will investigate the case quickly and issue an order. It will be a model," said a Taunggyi resident.
The owner of the Lashio Baegyi account is U Nay Thway, who is a second-hand motorcycle dealer under the name Ko Nay.
U Nay Thway is the first person to be arrested under the law to protect multi-party democratic general elections from sabotage after it was enacted.
The Law on the Protection of Multi-Party Democratic General Elections from Disruption and Sabotage was enacted on July 29, 2025.
According to Section 23(a) of the said law, no person shall in any way speak, speak, organise, incite, protest or distribute any written material to disrupt the process of multi-party democratic general elections or any part thereof, and if convicted of violating this prohibition, he shall be sentenced to imprisonment for a minimum of three years and a maximum of seven years, and may also be fined. - Eleven Media/ANN
