SINGAPORE: The National Environment Agency (NEA) is investigating after water in a canal in Yishun Close turned green.
Nee Soon GRC MP Jackson Lam said on Tuesday (Aug 26) that he checked with NEA after some residents noticed the discolouration.
Photos he shared in a Facebook post that evening showed the discoloured water in a stretch of the canal.
In the comments, Facebook user Yvonne Lim shared a photo of the canal taken on Aug 16, showing the water was a bright blue colour.
Lam said that the agency’s officers have traced the affected canal through surveillance and inspections, and identified a potential source of the discolouration.
Investigations are ongoing.
He urged residents to report such issues through the OneService app to keep Singapore’s waterways clean.

In March, the water in a Tengah canal turned brown due to accumulated silt layers churned up by rain during a monsoon surge.
In 2024, a canal near Newton turned radiant baby blue. National water agency PUB said that no abnormalities were detected in the water quality downstream of the Bukit Timah Canal or in Marina Reservoir.
In 2016, reddish water was found in a canal in Jurong West. PUB said that it was “organic solvent and dye”. - The Straits Times/ANN
