A decade after raping speech-hearing impaired minor, man in India gets 10-year rigorous imprisonment

NEW DELHI: Special POSCO Court in Odisha’s Bargarh district on Monday (July 28) convicted a man to 10-year rigorous imprisonment (RI), a decade after he had raped a minor hearing and speech impaired girl.

The convict Samir Seth had committed the crime on Aug 4, 2015 by raping the victim, when she was 15-year-old.

Though the victim was not able to communicate properly, she managed to intimate the sexual assault committed upon her to her mother through sign language.

"The convict Samir Seth is found guilty U/s 376(2)(0) PC/ 6 POCSO Act and convicted there under.

"The convict is sentenced to undergo Rigorous Imprisonment for 10 years and to pay a fine of Rs 10,000, in default of payment of fine, he shall undergo RI for a further term of four months.

"District Legal Services Authority is directed to pay compensation of an amount of Rs10 Lakhs to the victim who is a deaf and dumb girl," the Special POSCO Court ruled on Monday. - The Statesman/ANN
