Sri Lanka launches national campaign against pyramid schemes

COLOMBO: The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) announced on Sunday (July 13) that it will launch an awareness week from July 14 to July 18 to educate the public about the dangers of pyramid schemes, which have increased across the country in recent years.

The CBSL said that the campaign will highlight the risks of pyramid schemes, an illegal investment activity in Sri Lanka, and the threat they pose to individuals and the broader economy.

The campaign will take place in 6,172 schools and 14,022 Grama Niladhari divisions (sub-units of Divisional Secretariats) across the country, reaching both students and local communities, the bank said.

Earlier this year, the central bank identified 23 companies operating pyramid schemes in Sri Lanka. The central bank regularly publishes lists of companies involved in illegal pyramid schemes to warn the public. - Xinhua
