Brunei-based law professor ranked among the world’s top legal scholars

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): Senior Professor of Law at Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA), Professor Dr Nehaluddin Ahmad has been ranked among the world’s top 10 legal scholars, according to the 2025 AD Scientific Index.

He places 10th globally in the field of Law and Legal Studies, ranks first in Asia and stands as the highest-ranked academic across all disciplines in Brunei Darussalam.

The ranking is based on the h-index, a metric that reflects both the productivity and impact of a scholar’s published work.

With more than 300 research publications and over two dozen books to his name, Professor Ahmad’s work has influenced judicial decisions in courts such as the Malaysian High Court, the Supreme Court of Australia and the Supreme Court of India.

His legal insights have also contributed to key policy discussions within the European Commission and the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Bitcoin.

Beyond the courtroom and legislative forums, his scholarship has been cited by academics at leading institutions including the University of Oxford, Yale University, University of Cambridge and Cornell University.

With an academic career spanning India, Tanzania, Malaysia, Singapore, and more than 15 years of dedicated service in Brunei, Professor Ahmad has established himself as a globally recognised authority in legal education and research.

His achievements have also been recognised nationally. In 2024, he received the Anugerah Guru Cemerlang (Teacher Excellence Award) from His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, followed by the Research Excellence Award in 2025. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
