MANILA: Alert level 3 remains hoisted over the Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island as it released 1,044 tonnes of sulphur dioxide in the past 24 hours, according to the state seismology bureau.

Alert Level 3 indicates a high level of volcanic unrest, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In its latest 24-hour monitoring report on Wednesday, Phivolcs also logged 22 volcanic earthquakes, which is lower than the recorded 31 volcanic quakes on Tuesday’s monitoring.

The latest report likewise showed that the volcano generated a weak 75-metre-high plume, which was drifting northwestward.

Phivolcs also noted continuous degassing in Kanlaon, as its edifice likewise remains inflated.

The agency warned the public of potential volcanic hazards, such as sudden explosive eruptions, lava flows or effusions, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, rockfalls and lahars (mudflows) during heavy rainfall.

Phivolcs said that residents within a six-kilometre radius of Kanlaon should evacuate from its summit. Flying of any aircraft close to the volcano is also prohibited.
