Hospital access restricted, schools closed as police search for gunman in Australian town

SYDNEY: Schools have been closed and access to a hospital restricted as Australian police search for a gunman after shots were fired in a rural town on Wednesday morning (May 28).

The police service in Australia's northeastern state of Queensland said in a statement on Wednesday that multiple gunshots were fired from a property in the rural town of Kingaroy, about 150 kilometres northwest of Brisbane, shortly before 4 a.m. local time.

Several people who were inside the property at the time were able to safely leave and police said that a search is underway for a 25-year-old man who is believed to be armed.

Access to the Kingaroy Hospital has been restricted until further notice due to the incident.

The police statement said that other businesses and facilities in the area, including schools, have been advised to close as the situation is ongoing. - Xinhua
