BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Datuk Paduka Goh King Chin expressed deep appreciation for Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's speech at the first meeting of the 21st Session of the Legislative Council (LegCo) yesterday (Feb 26), in which the monarch called for the session to take place twice a year.
The former LegCo member, who served three terms from 2004 to 2016, said that this is an excellent opportunity for LegCo members to discuss matters concerning citizens during the meeting. He also expressed gratitude for the Sultan’s concern for the well-being of the people.
Goh, who was pleased to attend yesterday’s opening ceremony, further conveyed his appreciation for the Sultan's speech regarding stateless permanent residents being granted access to the same medical services as citizens.
Meanwhile, LegCo member Chong Chin Yee noted that it was heartening to hear the Sultan's appreciation and recognition of the unwavering commitment to advancing the national development agenda through dialogue and work visits.
“Furthermore, I wholeheartedly welcome the decision to increase the frequency of parliamentary sessions from one to two per year, along with the enhancement of procedural frameworks and the review of the code of conduct,” said Chong. She added that these enhancements would undoubtedly strengthen parliamentary oversight, ensure more timely legislation and improve responsiveness to national issues.
They would also reinforce accountability and strengthen the governance framework, ensuring the nation continues to be served effectively. “In response to His Majesty’s insightful emphasis on enhancing human capital development and national capabilities, I would like to commend His Majesty for recognising the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI).”
This forward-thinking approach, Chong said, is crucial in positioning Brunei as a competitive force in the digital era, unlocking opportunities for innovation, economic expansion and national prosperity.
AI technologies, she added, hold the potential to revolutionise various sectors by automating processes, enhancing operational efficiency and fostering new avenues for economic and social progress. “We are at a defining moment where technological advancements can empower us to make more informed decisions and accelerate our nation’s progress. By embracing innovation, strengthening governance and fostering collaboration, we can build a resilient and prosperous future for Brunei.”
Echoing the Sultan’s aspirations, she expressed her eagerness to engage in meaningful discussions, contribute to strategic decision-making and enhance collaborative efforts towards the realisation of Brunei Vision 2035.
The President of the Brunei Youth Council and former LegCo member Khairunnisa Ashari expressed her deep appreciation for the Sultan’s forward-thinking vision in prioritising AI and the technological revolution as key drivers for the country’s future.
“This focus is especially crucial for the development of our youth, as it equips them with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world, ensuring they remain competitive on a global stage,” Khairunnisa.
Furthermore, she added, the Sultan emphasised the evaluation of government policies by the people’s representatives, which demonstrates his commitment to fostering trust and accountability. Such initiatives are essential for building a more inclusive and participatory society, where every voice is heard and valued, she said.
“I also appreciate His Majesty’s consistent recognition of the vital role non-governmental organisations play in our nation’s progress. His acknowledgment not only validates our efforts but also inspires us to continue contributing meaningfully to society.” - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
