'No HPMV case in Indonesia', but govt still send out alerts to people to remain vigilant of new virus

JAKARTA (Bernama-Antara): The Health Ministry reported no finding of cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), currently spreading in China, and reminded the public to be vigilant, stay calm, and take preventive measures, reported Indonesian News Agency (Antara).

The ministry's spokesperson, Widyawati, noted in a statement on Saturday that the virus spreads widely and quickly, causing a significant spike in cases in northern China.

This virus has recently raised global alarm, prompting Widyawati to remind the public of the importance of taking preventive actions, such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, washing hands regularly, and wearing masks in public places to lower the risk of contracting infectious diseases.

She affirmed that Indonesia is actively observing the progression of the HMPV outbreak in China and other countries while also taking anticipatory measures by increasing vigilance at the country's entry points, which involves monitoring health quarantines for international travellers exhibiting symptoms of Influenza-like Illness (ILI).

"We coordinate with related parties to ensure effective preventive measures. This aims to prevent the virus from entering Indonesia," she remarked.

Widyawati explained that HMPV is a virus causing respiratory tract infections, with symptoms similar to common flu, such as coughing, runny nose, fever and shortness of breath. In severe cases, the virus can cause complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

She remarked that the virus does not pose a significant threat to healthy adults but carries a greater risk for children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, including those with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, respiratory disorders, and heart disease.

The spokesperson explained that there is no vaccine or specific treatment for HMPV to date. She emphasised that supportive measures, such as rehydration, managing fever, and ensuring adequate rest, are quite effective in relieving symptoms.

The Health Ministry urges the public to monitor official information regarding the development of the virus.

The government also emphasises the importance of community cooperation in implementing preventive measures and immediately visiting a health facility if they experience symptoms of respiratory tract infections. - Bernama-Antara
