Serial housebreaker in Brunei sentenced to three years’ jail

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): The Intermediate Court of Brunei has sentenced Muhammad Alinor Jailani, 54, to three years’ imprisonment for housebreaking.

Prosecutors Radin Wafri Radin Sufri and Ahmad Firdaus Mohammad revealed that the incident took place on May 2 and 3 at a residence in Kuala Belait.

The defendant and his accomplices climbed over the gate and entered the house through a window before ransacking the residence.

The defendant took coins and assisted one of his accomplices to put some stolen items into a bag.

The defendant also said another accomplice took a small battery-powered light and a yellow-coloured waterjet. After 40 minutes, he and both accomplices left the house with the stolen items through the same window.

The house owner found his home ransacked and his belongings missing when he visited on the afternoon of May 3. This led to a police report and the defendant’s arrest. The defendant could not ascertain what other items had been stolen from the house by his two accomplices.

Intermediate Court Judge Pengiran Masni binti Pengiran Haji Bahar who heard the case noted the seriousness of housebreaking and its impact on the victims.

The judge stated that deterrence was a crucial factor in determining the sentence. The court also took into account Muhammad Alinor’s previous convictions related to property offences, which date back to 1992. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
