Akebono, the first foreign-born sumo grand champ, dies


Akebono (pic), an American-born sumo wrestler who became the first non-Japanese grand champion or yokozuna, died of heart failure earlier this month in Tokyo.

The Japan Sumo Association confirmed Akebono death yesterday. He was 54.
