Myanmar police hands over 497 telecom fraud-scam suspects to China

YANGON/BEIJING (Xinhua): China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) on Friday said the Myanmar police handed over 497 telecom fraud suspects to China on Feb 21.

A team dispatched by the MPS coordinated with Myanmar police to apprehend the suspects during the Spring Festival holiday in February, according to the MPS.

This was Myanmar's first handover of telecom fraud suspects to China this year, an MPS official said, adding that the ministry will further its law enforcement cooperation with other countries and regions and intensify the crackdown on telecom fraud.

The MPS has been coordinating with Myanmar's law enforcement agencies to crack down on telecom fraud since 2023.

So far, a total of 46,000 individuals of Chinese background suspected of being involved in telecom scams have been arrested in Myanmar and handed over to China. - Xinhua
