BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): The Malay Kedayan Association (Pemedayan) on Sunday (Oct 2) conducted a mengelupis workshop at Taman Tanjong Bukit Mambangan in Kampong Lamunin, Tutong District.

More than 40 association members attended the one-day workshop organised as part of the association’s objectives in preserving the Kedayan culture.

Mengelupis is a traditional Kedayan activity during 'makan tahun' (annual feasts), weddings, family gatherings and Hari Raya.

The workshop focussed on kelupis sulang, which uses extract from the sulang fruit as its traditional yellow dye.

Turmeric is normally used to give the kelupis the yellow appearance but the taste differs from kelupis sulang, with sulang being a wild tree found in the jungle.

The workshop covered the equipment, ingredients as well as the process of mendadih and menjalin the kelupis, facilitated by association member Sisa Nayan.

Pemedayan said it will hold more workshops to maintain and preserve the Kedayan culture.
