One dead and two hurt in police helicopter crash in Philippines

MANILA, Feb 22 (dpa): A police officer was killed and two others injured in a helicopter crash on Monday (Feb 21) in the Philippines, the police has announced.

The H125 Airbus chopper crashed in a forested area off the town of Real in Quezon province, 67 kilometres east of Manila, said Jean Fajardo, a spokesperson for the national police.

The dead officer was a crew member on the vessel. The pilot and co-pilot were rescued with bruises, contusions and fractures, she said.

Fajardo said there was no information yet on what could have caused the crash, noting that the chopper was new and only delivered in January 2021.

"According to the pilot, the weather [was] also fine when they took off,” she added. "But there was a sudden, strong gust of wind that slammed them, causing the helicopter to crash.”

The chopper was on the way to pick up the chief of the national police, Fajardo said.

All other choppers of the national police - five of which are operational, and two under maintenance - are grounded while investigators look into the accident. - dpa
