BANGKOK, Oct 9 (The Nation Thailand/ANN): Thailand's Ministry of Public Health reported on Saturday that in the past 24 hours there are 10,630 new patients who tested positive for Covid-19, 67 of whom have been found in prisons.

Death toll in the country increased by 73, while 10,542 patients were cured and allowed to leave hospitals.

The country’s total caseload from Covid-19 stands at 1,700,067 – 1,572,332 of whom have recovered, 110,128 are still in hospitals and 17,607 have died.

Separately, another 480,064 people were given their first Covid-19 shot in the last 24 hours, 489,043 their second shot and 40,965 a booster, bringing the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered nationwide to 59,308,772.

Thailand's consumer confidence index also rose to 41.4 in September, moving up for the first time in seven months, as easing Covid-19 restrictions led to improving consumption and tourism activities, a survey has showed.

The reading climbed from 39.6 recorded in August, according to Thanawat Polwichai, director of the Economic and Business Forecasting Centre at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

Thanawat attributed the increase to the easing of restriction measures at the beginning of last month as the government tried to support the struggling economy.

The improvement in the country's Covid-19 situation, the government's stimulus measures and the implementation of tourism reopening pilot schemes on the islands of Phuket and Samui also helped bolster consumer confidence, he said.

According to Worldometer, confirmed cases globally had risen to 238.02 million on Saturday, 215.16 million of whom have recovered, 18 million are active cases (83,374 in severe condition) and 4.86 million have died (up by 7,611).

Thailand ranks 25th in the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 45.14 million, followed by India with 33.93 million, Brazil with 21.55 million, the UK with 8.08 million and Russia with 7.72 million. - The Nation Thailand/ANN
